Discover Comprehensive Foot Care from Chiropodist Lora Reale, D.Ch.
As a chiropodist, my goal is to provide patients with comprehensive foot care and superior made orthotics using the casting technique. This is the original and preferred technique by foot specialists. Its ultimate goal is the prevention of foot problems.
What is a chiropodist?
Chiropodists or podiatrists are the only health professionals who are trained exclusively to assess and treat foot problems. Other health professionals may provide some foot care, but only those who are members of the College of Chiropodists of Ontario may use the title.
General Chiropody Procedures
Chiropodists are authorized to perform a variety of procedures concerning the foot. This includes:
• Casting the Foot for Custom Orthotics
• Cutting into the Subcutaneous Tissues of the Foot
• Administering, by Injection into the Feet, a Designated Substance
• Prescribing Designated Drugs
What does a chiropodist do?
Professional foot care can help children, adults, and seniors with a variety of foot problems. Early detection of foot conditions may prevent problems later in life. Chiropody commonly treats problems such as:
• Heel, Arch and General Foot Pain
• Flat Feet and High Arched Feet
• Shin Splints
• Pediatric Foot Problems
• Diabetic and Arthritic Foot Problems
• Corns, Calluses and Warts
• Prevention of Bunions and Hammertoes
Footcare and footwear education is discussed regularly to help keep your feet healthy and problem free. Treatment of some of the above may include the use of orthotics.
What is an orthotic?
Orthotics are prescribed custom devices made from a plaster impression. These specialized shoe inserts are used to treat a variety of foot and lower limb problems. The need for orthotics is assessed through an extensive biomechanical examination.
Chiropodists are extensively trained for three years in biomechanics. Academic and clinical experience is incorporated to give a well-rounded and practical approach to the body in motion. This knowledge is used to determine when and if orthotics are necessary.
